About the Institute

Mission Statement
The Emmaus Institute, Inc. is an ecumenical interfaith resource for personal and social renewal, healing, reconciliation and human development.  Utilizing insights and principles derived from the disciplines of theology and the behavioral sciences, Emmaus Institute guides individuals, couples, families, groups and social systems towards the achievement of wholeness and healh.  The Instiute is engaged in local, national and international service.

The Emmaus Institute, Inc. was founded in 1968 as the Open Ear Associates to carry out a ministry to the inner city population of Boston, MA.  It took its name from Isaiah 50:5 and established the first halfway house based rehabilitation program for African-American alcoholics.

It is currently based in Nashua, New Hampshire.  The Emmaus Institute,Inc. is a member of the Nashua Area Interfaith Council and the New Hampshire Council of Churches.

Organizational Profile

The Emmaus Institute, Inc. was founded in 1968 as the Open Ear Associates to carry out a ministry to the inner city population of Boston, MA. It took its name from Isaiah 50:5 and established the first halfway house based rehabilitation program for African-American alcoholics.

In 1979 the organization, now known as the Commonwealth Center for Community Health Development, expanded its scope to work on behalf of the development of holistic primary care for medically underserved populations. In 1996 it became The Emmaus Institute, Inc. It is a 501(c) 3 tax exempt non-profit organization and is currently based in Nashua, New Hampshire. The Emmaus Institute, Inc. is a member of the Nashua Area Interfaith Council and the New Hampshire Council of Churches.

Staff Members
William J. Manseau, Director of Emmaus Institute Counseling Services, is a graduate of St. John's Seminary, Brighton, MA. He received a D.Min. degree from Chicago Theological Seminary and a D.Min. degree, with honors, in Psychology and Clinical Studies from Andover Newton Theological School, Newton Centre, MA.

Dr. Manseau is a State of New Hampshire Licensed Pastoral Psychotherapist and a Fellow in the American /Association of Pastoral Counselors.
